What's Involved

The Level 2 Introduction to Early Years Education and Care Certificate (part-time) enables you to develop specialist knowledge in the childcare sector. The course provides a practical work-based qualification for staff already employed or volunteering in a childcare setting.

You will work towards achieving core and optional units. All of these add to the required content for your award. Your selection of option units will depend on a discussion between you and an assessor about the duties within your role.

Entry Requirements

You do not need any formal qualifications for entry to Level 2 but all candidates must attend an interview and complete a skills test for literacy, the outcome of this test will determine the offer. You will need to source a placement for a minimum of 7 hours per week in a childcare setting and provide confirmation of this in writing prior to enrolment. A current enhanced DBS disclosure will need to be shown to the college or you will need to apply for one prior to enrolment.

Where will it take me?

You may be able to seek employment in the childcare field if not already in paid employment. There is the possibility that you may apply for the Level 3 Diploma, however, there are strict entry criteria that must be fulfilled in order to gain a place on this course.

You can seek employment in the childcare field if not already employed, this could be day nurseries, pre-schools, creches or other similar establishments.

Course Assessment Method

All students are assessed through direct observations of work with children of 0-18 years. The National Occupational Standards outline is very specific so observations will be carried out by a qualified assessor. In addition, you will build a portfolio of evidence.

The qualification is made up of mandatory and optional units. You need to complete 13 core units (31 credits), plus optional units to make your total award up to a minimum of 35 credits.

Some of the mandatory units are:

  • Communication;
  • Health and Safety;
  • Promoting equality and inclusion;
  • Having a duty of care.
