What's Involved

Counselling is a talking therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to deal with emotional issues. Sometimes the term "counselling" is used to refer to talking therapies in general, but counselling is also a type of therapy in its own right.

This is a 15 week course which will introduce you to the field of counselling and the skills required in this profession.

The objective of the Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Award in Counselling Skills is to give learners an introduction to Counselling Skills in preparation for further learning or training. The development of listening skills will also support learners to develop skills need in daily life and at work for example in the field of health and social care.

You will participate in interactive lectures, seminars and debates. These will cover a range of topics designed to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the following key areas within counselling:

  • Counselling skills;
  • The role of the counsellor;
  • Counselling values;
  • Meeting the needs of different client groups and placement providers.

Entry Requirements

*An interest in Counselling

*Adequate written and oral communication skills

Where will it take me?

You will have the opportunity to progress the Access to HE Diploma in Counselling and eventually to train as a counsellor via the BA in Integrative Counselling (Subject to grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths).

Course Assessment Method

By producing a portfolio of evidence.
