This qualification gives learners the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction appropriately.

Mental Health problems affect around 1 in 10 children and young people. These issues include depression, anxiety and conduct disorder and can often be a direct response to occurrences in their lives. Emotional well being is just as important as a child’s mental health, therefore it is important for those working with children and young people to have a good understanding of the concepts, risk factors and impact of mental health.

What you will learn:

  • Understand the concept of mental health;
  • Understand risk factors which may affect the mental well-being of children and young people;
  • Know about specific mental health conditions that children and young people may experience;
  • Understand the impact mental health concerns can have on children and young people;
  • Understand how to promote mental well-being in children and young people.

Official data showed that over 7,500 people were referred to the Prevent programme in 2015/16. The purpose of this qualification is to support anyone who is responsible for the safeguarding of people and for helping prevent radicalisation. It gives learners an understanding of recognising the signs of abuse, how to reduce the risk of radicalisation and the potential consequences of illegal online activity.

What you will learn:

  • Understand how to reduce the risk of radicalisation;
  • Know how to recognise signs of abuse or potential harm;
  • Understand how to reduce the risks posed online.

This qualification is delivered at our Quarles Campus in Harold Hill. It is fully expected that all learners that begin their learning at this campus will complete their learning at this campus, regardless of the duration of the programme.

This is a one year programme which aims to develop your skills and understanding of the industry as you build a firm foundation for progression onto University.

You will participate in interactive lectures, seminars and debates both with your class and with guest speakers. These will cover a range of topics designed to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the following key areas within counselling, social care and related professions.

  • Counselling skills
  • Making sense of counselling intervention
  • The role of the counsellor
  • Ethical responsibilities and framework
  • Counselling values
  • Counselling in a diverse society
  • Meeting the needs of different client groups and placement providers
  • Research skills

You will also work on your academic, study, literacy and examination skills alongside preparation for university.
