Emotional well being is just as important as a child’s mental health, therefore it is important for those working with children and young people to have a good understanding of the concepts, risk factors and impact of mental health.

Official data showed that over 7,500 people were referred to the Prevent programme in 2015/16. The purpose of this qualification is to support anyone who is responsible for the safeguarding of people and for helping prevent radicalisation. It gives learners an understanding of recognising the signs of abuse, how to reduce the risk of radicalisation and the potential consequences of illegal online activity.

Counselling is a talking therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to deal with emotional issues. Sometimes the term "counselling" is used to refer to talking therapies in general, but counselling is also a type of therapy in its own right.

This is a 15 week course which will introduce you to the field of counselling and the skills required in this profession.

The objective of the Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Award in Counselling Skills is to give learners an introduction to Counselling Skills in preparation for further learning or training. The development of listening skills will also support learners to develop skills need in daily life and at work for example in the field of health and social care.

You will participate in interactive lectures, seminars and debates. These will cover a range of topics designed to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the following key areas within counselling.
