Deputy Mayor takes time out to visit Careers and Education Fair
Deputy Mayor of Havering Cllr Michael Deon-Burton took time out of his busy schedule to talk to students and representatives of Havering Sixth Form College at the borough’s biggest Careers and Education Fair.
Along with Cllr Robert Benham, Cabinet Member for Education, Children & Families and Deputy Leader of the Council, he visited the Havering RPA Moving On event held at Hornchurch Sport Centre in Harrow Lodge Park on Tuesday 2nd October.
The College’s vibrant orange banner and stand stood out among the many schools, sixth forms, colleges, universities, employers and apprenticeship providers giving advice to Year 10 and Year 11 students and their parents who were seeking information on opportunities available after leaving school.
Cllr Deon-Burton spoke to our students studying Travel & Tourism who were hosting the Havering Sixth Form College stand at the event for part of the day to complete one of the units of their BTEC Extended Diploma course.
He said: “It is wonderful for me to speak to everyone and find out about the good work that goes on in the borough and in Havering Sixth Form College. I am very impressed with the professionalism of everyone here and I have found out a lot about the different courses on offer.”
The annual Moving On event aims to help all 15 and 16-year-olds living in Havering to decide what they want to do once they have taken their GCSEs.
Councillor Robert Benham said: “This is a great opportunity for pupils to talk with colleges, sixth forms, training providers, employers and universities, where they can gather advice for their next steps.”
More than 60 exhibitors were at the event, including: Metropolian Police, Havering College of Further & Higher Education, Willmott Dixon Construction, Barking & Dagenham College, Jobwise Training, Middleton Murray, ELUTEC, New City College – Redbridge, Transport for London, Goldsmiths University, Fashion Retail Academy, Halls of Ivy, the RAF and BHR University Hospitals NHS Trust.
The week was also a busy one for the Havering Sixth Form College MRA (Marketing Recruitment & Admissions) team with the Opportunity Thurrock careers event the following day, evening presentations at Brittons Academy and Hornchurch High School, and a Careers Fair at Forest Gate Community School.
