Building links for careers in construction
Future careers in the construction industry look likely for four students who spent their half term holiday doing work experience at Wates.
Thomas Adams, Chloe Mawette, Max Rankin and Omar Da Silva attended Wates’ Atam Academy site in Chadwell Heath and all found the placement to be hugely beneficial.
Wates is one of the UK’s leading construction, development and property services companies and staff who the students had spent time with all gave positive feedback and were impressed with the numerous questions the students asked.
A Wates representative said: “All four students showed a genuine interest in the construction industry as their future career paths and at the end of the week they gave an excellent presentation to us about what they had learned.”
The students even gave suggestions to Wates on how to attract more young people into the construction industry, such as:
• Produce videos by people in different jobs about their roles and how they got there to help young people interested in construction and also those who may not have considered it
• Involve the marketing team in school presentations
• Run more workshops in schools and colleges to promote the apprenticeships and traineeships available
Chloe, who is interested in the commercial aspect of construction and is studying A Levels, said: “Attending this work experience was definitely what I expected and more. It has given me knowledge about the construction industry as a whole and has shown me what options are out there.”
Tom, who is also studying A Levels and is hoping to be a surveyor, said: “Working at Wates was a great experience which has increased my knowledge of the construction industry. The team were very friendly and happy to answer any questions I had.”
Engineering and Maths student Omar said: “I now have a better understanding of how the construction industry operates and I have better knowledge of what career choice I will strive for in the future.”
Fellow Engineering student Max, who has a strong interest in a career in civil engineering, added: “I have learned a great deal about the construction industry and about the process of constructing a building for a client.”
