What's Involved

Completion of this qualification provides you with an introduction to and a basic understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to care for young children, for example:

  • Knowing the support a young child needs to gain confidence through play
  • Understanding activities that will develop a child’s talking and listening skills
  • Understanding the role of a routine in the care of a young child
  • Knowing about the need for a healthy diet for a young child
  • Knowing about combining food to make up a balanced diet
  • Knowing how to respect and value children as individuals
  • Knowing the role of adults in supporting play and leisure activities in the community

Teaching is classroom based with a 2-3 week block placement at the end of the course in a day nursery or pre-school. Units studied might include: Confidence building for the young child through play; providing a safe and hygienic environment for a young child; routines; respecting and valuing children; children’s play and leisure activities.

Entry Requirements

Satisfactory interview, Satisfactory DBS (formerly CRB) check.

Where will it take me?

Successful students can progress onto the Level 1 study programme in Childcare or Health and Social Care or an alternative Level 1 course within the college.

You will have one assignment which will be assessed per unit
