Hair Beauty

What's Involved

The aim of the course is to introduce you to the hairdressing and beauty industries and the skills needed in order to work as a hair stylist. You will develop your skills of shampooing, blow-drying and styling women's hair. You will also develop your knowledge of different hair types, health and safety requirements, and how to present yourself to clients within the hairdressing industry. 

You can expect to study:

  • How to section hair effectively
  • How to apply temporary colour
  • How to effectively shampoo and condition hair
  • How to present a professional image
  • How to plait and twist hair
  • Working with others in the salon
  • Salon reception

There will also be opportunities to develop your creative skills in the art of dressing and styling hair and to take part in projects to create a combined hair and beauty image, as well as learning how to display retail stock in salons and how to promote products and services.

Entry Requirements

You'll require English and Maths at GCSE Grades 3-1 (D-G) plus two further GCSEs at Grade 2 (F).

A satisfactory school reference and attendance report is also required.

Where will it take me?

The skills and knowledge you will gain from this Level 1 qualification will prepare you to progress to the next level of vocational study at Level 2. Successful students can go on to join the VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing or the VTCT Level 2 Hair and Media Make-up courses. Alternatively students can apply for a Hairdressing Apprenticeship in the workplace.
