What's Involved

The Extended Diploma in Applied Science is the second year of the full-time programme that is equivalent to three A levels. The course consists units that are delivered allowing you to explore the applications of the three main disciplines of Science: Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

The course aims to give you the opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding by experiencing work across a range of contexts in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Scientific practical investigations are seen as very important aspect of the course and continues throughout the two years along with critical studies.

(You will progress onto the Extended Diploma after successful completion of the National Foundation Diploma in the first year).

Entry Requirements

Successful completion of the Applied Science Level 3 National Foundation Diploma BTEC (first year).

Where will it take me?

This course is designed to provide highly specialist work-related qualification in a range of vocational Applied Science sectors. It gives you the knowledge, understanding and skills that you need to prepare for employment in this field. The qualification also provides career development opportunities for those already in work, and through articulation to higher education, degree and professional development programmes provide progression opportunities within the same cognate or related areas of study within universities and other institutions.

The course attracts UCAS points that equate to similar-sized general qualifications within educational institutions within the UK. On successful completion of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science, you can progress to or within employment and/or continue your study in Applied Science or related vocational area.

You could progress onto one of our level 4 courses in a related field or pursue a course at university. In the past students have progressed onto a variety of courses including: Marine Biology; Biology; Genetics; Chemistry; Chemical Engineering; Nursing; Biomedicine; and Pharmaceutical Science.

Employment opportunities could include a career within forensic science, laboratory assistant, medical technician and many more.

Course Assessment Method

You will be assessed throughout the course via two external exams as well as written assignments and practical project work which will be moderated externally.
