What's Involved

This Access course is designed to prepare non-traditional 19+ learners, who have the ability, for entry in to Medicine and other medical related courses. The course is accredited by Gateway and carries nationally recognised certification. Successful completion of an Access course is recognised by most universities as a qualification for entry to Higher Education.

You will be covering modules in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths to give you a sound base for study at University. You will become proficient in a number of standard laboratory techniques including microscopy, dissections, spectroscopy, gel electrophoresis, aseptic technique, microbiology, chemical and biochemical identification tests, organic syntheses and approximations of physical standards.

Entry Requirements

Ideally you should have 5 GCSEs or equivalent passes in English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Maths. Students are advised to check the entry criteria for individual universities, as these vary and some may require grades higher than a 'B' in the above subjects. Previous academic qualifications are asked for on the application form and you must have good literacy and numeracy skills to cope with the requirements of the course and the written assessments.

Where will it take me?

Learners on the Access to Medicine programme would have a clear progression pathway to multiple local universities. Those in the area that already accept this qualification for entry into Medicine include the Medical College at Anglia Ruskin University. Alternative degrees include Biology, Biomedical Science, Medical Science, Applied Science, Bioengineering, Dietetics and other medical related professions.

Course Assessment Method

A wide range of assessment tasks will adequately test your ability to meet the diverse range of skills, knowledge and values of professional competence required to meet the aims of the programme. This will include examinations, presentations, essays, assignments, projects and practical assessments.
