What's Involved

In your first year, you will have the chance to lay the foundations of your scientific practical skills and techniques. It will include subject content from all three sciences but will focus more on Chemistry investigations. When you progress on to the second year, we will focus more on Biological techniques. You will work to complete two external exams, written assignments and practical investigations to complete a total of 6 units in the first year of the two year programme.

The core units of study are listed below:

  • Principles and Applications of Science 1;
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques;
  • Science Investigation Skills;
  • Additional units will be hand-picked by the lecturing staff to provide you with a broader understanding of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Entry Requirements

At least 4 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above including Double Science, English Language and maths.

Where will it take me?

This course is designed to provide highly specialist work-related qualification in a range of vocational Applied Science sectors. It gives you the knowledge, understanding and skills that you need to prepare for employment in this field. The qualification also provides career development opportunities for those already in work, and through articulation to higher education, degree and professional development programmes provide progression opportunities within the same cognate or related areas of study within universities and other institutions.

You may be able to progress on to the Extended Diploma in Applied Science which attracts UCAS points that equate to similar-sized general qualifications within educational institutions within the UK. On successful completion of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science, you can progress to or within employment and/or continue your studies at a Higher Education level in Applied Science or related vocational area.

Course Assessment Method

You will be assessed throughout the course via two external exams as well as written assignments and practical project work.
