What's Involved

The aim of this course is to encourage students to speak, read, listen, communicate and write clearly, accurately and confidently.

Students will learn how to:

  • Listen, understand and make relevant contributions to discussions with others in a range of contexts
  • Apply their understanding of language to adapt delivery and content to suit audience and purpose
  • Read a range of different text types confidently and fluently, applying their knowledge and understanding of texts to their own writing
  • Write texts of varying complexity, with accuracy, effectiveness, and correct spelling, punctuation and grammar

The course encourages students to demonstrate their competence in English by using it in real-world situations, as well as demonstrating a sound grasp of basic English knowledge and skills. There will be units involving speaking, listening and communicating; a reading module; and a writing module.

Entry Requirements

Progress from entry 3 and/or pass initial assessment

Where will it take me?

Successful students will be able to progress onto Level 2 Functional Skills English

100% Exam – students must pass all components to achieve Level 1
