What's Involved

This course has been developed in conjunction with industry experts and is suitable for a wide range of students, for example the self-employed, adults wishing to specialise by pursuing single units, and young people who are thinking of careers within engineering. The units studied are a development from the ABC Level 1 Certificate and act as a progression to the ABC Level 3 Certificate and Diploma in Fabrication and Welding Practice. The qualification includes the latest fabrication and welding techniques, materials, processes and practices, and units are assessed in line with industry demands, which include updated rigorous practical assessments and online multiple-choice exams.

You can expect to study some of these topics:

  • Materials, Science and Calculations for Fabrication and Welding Practice
  • Manual Metal-Arc Welding
  • Metal-Arc Gas Shielded Welding
  • Tungsten-Arc Gas Shielded Welding
  • Fabrication Processes – Plate
  • Fabrication Processes - Sheet Metal
  • Engineering Drawing Using Manual and CAD Techniques

The course is designed to give students a short, sharp and focused hands-on experience of welding and/or fabrication processes.

Entry Requirements

Students must hold an ABC Welding and Fabrication A Level 1 Certificate or similar qualification in welding with a commitment to this area of work and the potential to satisfactorily complete the course.

Where will it take me?

Successful completion of this course can lead to progression to the Fabrication and Welding course at Level 3, and also other Automotive and Engineering programmes. The course develops a wide range of transferable skills, such as problem-solving, team working, understanding technical information, critical thinking and gaining the necessary workshop skills that the sector requires. Students will develop the confidence, knowledge and skills needed if they choose to go directly into employment in the mechanical/fabrication engineering industry or if they wish to seek a vocational apprenticeship or trainee role.

Did you know?
Engineering and manufacturing is one of the UK's broadest sectors and, according to Engineering UK, workers within the sector accounted for 19% of all UK employees in 2019. While some engineering- related industries, such as mining and quarrying, are in decline, a range of other fields are actively seeking new recruits in aerospace, automotive, design, manufacturing, power, marine, instrumentation and control telecoms, digital communications and networks, software, rail, process control,  production, project management and transportation.

Course Assessment Method

Each unit is assessed through the completion of an assessment pack containing a task related to the specific unit. Four units are also assessed via a mandatory multiple-choice knowledge examination covering the whole qualification.
