Construction

Free-Online-Learning-Courses Advanced-Learner-Loans-5 Havering-College-Achievement-Rates-2015

What's Involved

You will learn the theory and practical skills covering plumbing and domestic heating. To pass the course you will need to complete practical tasks and theory tests. Your tutor will help you to prepare for these. At the same time you will be improving your wider skills such as Maths, English and ICT. These are all skills you will need to progress to the next level or into an apprenticeship.

The course will focus on a range of basic plumbing theory and practices, including:

  • Pipe bending and types of jointing
  • Basic maintenance on taps and valves
  • Rainwater systems and maintenance
  • Basin and WC installation and maintenance
  • Health and safety
  • Environmental awareness

Compulsory units to be studied include: Structure of the construction industry; Fundamental safe working practices; Environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwellings; Site preparation for working in the construction industry; Above ground drainage; Copper pipework; Plastic pressure pipework; Low carbon steel pipework; Installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing systems and Plumbing science.

Entry Requirements

GCSE English language or mathematics at Grade 4, plus GCSE English Language or mathematics at Grade 3.

Where will it take me?

This Level 1 course allows you to progress to City & Guilds qualifications including the Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing Studies, the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating and the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Installing and Maintaining. Students who complete the course can also seek employment in the plumbing industry as a first year Apprentice.
