What's Involved

This is a one-year full time course and it is designed for students who have achieved the Level 1 Carpentry qualification and who therefore already have some basic knowledge of carpentry. The aim of the course is to develop and widen the practical skills and knowledge required in order to become an employable carpenter.

You can expect to study the following units:

  • Principles of building (examination)
  • Health and Safety Information (examination)
  • First fix floor and roofs
  • First fix frames, partitions and stairs
  • Second Fix Operations
  • Carrying out maintenance
  • Set up and operate a circular saw

If you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 or above in English, you will study an additional English course. If you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 or above in Maths, you will study an additional Maths course.

There are two online examinations that must be completed by students with practical assessments completed within a portfolio.

Entry Requirements

Students must usually have completed the Level 1 Diploma. All places are subject to a satisfactory interview and Skillsbuilder assessment.

Where will it take me?

On successful completion of the Level 2 course you will progress onto the Level 3 Carpentry course. Or you may wish to undertake an Apprenticeship programme or consider transferring to the Level 3 Built Environment course (management route).

Alternatively you could also find work within the industry, for example, working for a construction company, local authority or shop-fitting firm.

On completion of the level 1 course you will be guided and advised onto either a Level 2 Site Carpentry, Level 2 Bench Joinery course or Level 2 Maintenance Operations. Alternatively you may wish to undertake an apprenticeship.

Course Assessment Method

All online examination based units are externally assessed whilst practical units are internally assessed. You will build up a portfolio of evidence which will be internally assessed and verified by the centre and then externally verified by City & Guilds.
