What's Involved

The construction industry has had for many years a traditional apprenticeship programme covering the craft occupations. Painters and Decorators operate in domestic and commercial properties and undertake the decoration and protection of buildings. Properties include houses, schools, offices, hospitals factories and construction sites. Working internally or externally they work individually and/or as part of a team applying water-borne and/or solvent-borne paint coatings and wallcoverings. Painters have good knowledge of paint coatings and wallcoverings and understand and comply with statutory, safety and environmental requirements. They are responsible for their own work achieving a high quality finish at the appropriate pace. Painters are good problem solvers and communicators and are able to interact effectively with colleagues, clients and associated trades.

The minimum duration of this apprenticeship is 18 months and typically 24months. You will be required to attend college one day per week.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSE’s Grade A*- E including: • GCSE Maths Grade E/3 or Functional Skill in Maths Level 1 • GCSE English Language Grade E/3 or Functional Skill in English Level 1

Working in a role such as Painter or Industrial Painter for a minimum of 30hours per week.

Where will it take me?

By the end of your apprenticeship you will have achieved: Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating

Painting and decorating has a wide range of opportunities that apprentices can be involved with in a structured career path, such as new builds, refurbishments and designer work. This apprenticeship will enable progression to:

• Advanced (Level 3) Apprenticeship in Construction Building: Decorative Finishing (Painting and Decorating)

After gaining work experience in the chosen occupational area there are also opportunities to progress into occupational work supervision, management or technical support areas.

At the end of your apprenticeship, the college will work with you and your employer to help you go on to the next level of training or gain full-time employment, either with your current employer or another employer the college has access to. The skills, knowledge and qualification you will gain from your apprenticeship means that Havering College can help you get to the level employers are looking for.

Course Assessment Method

You will be assessed using a range of methods such as; Direct observation of tasks or activities, examination of work products produced by learners (e.g. diary notes, site notes, completed reports), examination of witness testimonies from people, other than the assessor, who are prepared to provide statements detailing specific details of learners’ performance, review of records of ‘question and answer’ sessions covering specific aspects of the knowledge and understanding and Professional discussion. All of these assessment methods will build your portfolio of evidence.
