What's Involved

The construction industry has had for many years a traditional apprenticeship programme covering the craft occupations. This framework will help to attract, retain and develop talent into a range of craft occupations at Intermediate (Level 2) and Advanced (Level 3) in construction building and provide progression to supervisory and management level in order to provide the industry with a well-trained productive workforce.

The duration of this apprenticeship is generally 24 months.

Entry Requirements

  • English Language GCSE Grade C or Functional Skill Level 2;
  • Maths GCSE Grade C or Functional Skill Level 2;
  • Having previously completed A Levels or an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Construction Building: Decorative Finishing would be advantageous;
  • Working in a role such as Painter and Decorator.

Where will it take me?

By the end of your apprenticeship you will have achieved:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing – Painting and Decorating;
  • Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating;
  • Functional Skill in Maths Level 2 (if required);
  • Functional Skill in English Level 2 (if required);
  • Employee Rights and Responsibilities;
  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills.

Painting and decorating has a wide range of opportunities that apprentices can be involved with in a structured career path, such as new builds and refurbishments. Apprentices could be involved in small domestic projects or major projects such as the Olympic Park and Football Stadia. This apprenticeship will enable progression to:

  • NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations;
  • NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Management.

After gaining work experience in the chosen occupational area there are also opportunities to progress into occupational work supervision, management or technical support areas or:

HNC/HND:

  • Construction and the Built Environment;
  • Construction;
  • Construction Management.

Foundation Degree:

  • Construction and the Built Environment;
  • Construction Management;
  • Conservation and Restoration;

...or full time employment.

Course Assessment Method

You will be assessed using a range of methods such as; Direct observation of tasks or activities, examination of work products produced by learners (e.g. diary notes, site notes, completed reports), examination of witness testimonies from people, other than the assessor, who are prepared to provide statements detailing specific details of learners’ performance, review of records of ‘question and answer’ sessions covering specific aspects of the knowledge and understanding and Professional discussion. All of these assessment methods will build your portfolio of evidence.
