Hell Join the Navy as a BarberDerick Watson, aged 18, of Renown Close, Collier Row, has just won a prize for ladies hairdressing but he intends going into the Merchant Navy - as a barber.

For Derick is a man with two loves-the sea and his profession and this is the only way he can follow both. “I want to see other countries, especially Australia,” said Derick. “It will give me the chance of widening my knowledge of hair dressing if I join the Merchant Navy in this capacity”. Derick won First Year Day Release prize for hairdressing at Hornchurch College of Further Education.

Yes, Derick is a young man who know’s where he is going and so does Christine Copleston, aged 17, of Elmar Gardens, Rainham. Christine won the second year prize, “I’d like to do some travelling in foreign countries and then work for a time in New Zealand”, she said.

But blonde Janet Everingham, of Hill Rise, Upminster, Third Year prizewinner, who works for a local hairdresser is “Quite happy at home”.
