Meriel Wins Presidential Election 1Meriel Sawtell returned form Christmas break to Havering Technical College this week to face additional duties to those of a student.

For before the Yuletide division last month petite 17 years old Meriel of Brookside Hornchurch became the very first female president of the Students Association at Havering.

Meriel who is studying for Ordinary National Diploma in Business Studies plans in two years to go to teacher training college as a stepping stone to a junior school.

Now she has the responsibility of running the students own committee.

Raven haired Meriel the only girl to stand was elected with a 50 majority over opponent.              

She said: “In this job I am spokesman for every student although not all of them voted in the ballot at which I was elected.”

“I did not think for one minute that I would be elected but I thought it would make a change to have a go.”
