Overloading and short circuits gave no problems to 200 electrical apprentices last week. They were taking their first practical exam at Hornchurch College of Further Education. This College is one of the first in the country to anticipate the Industrial Training Act. Within five years, said the principal. Mr. A. Ebdon, all the other technical schools in the country will be starting similar courses to ensure their pupils of practical proficiency.
"The apprentices already take City and Guild exams. But it would be very difficult to organise national practical tests," explained Mr. Ebdon. The exam has been sponsored by the Electrical Contractors Association. They will be marking the students' efforts. "We are only too keen for our apprentices to be efficient. It is to our advantage that they understand their work," said Chairman Mr. R. Busby.
