We are delighted to have been shortlisted as a finalist for the College Engagement with Employers award at year’s Association of Colleges (AoC)’s Beacon Awards.

Now in its 24th year, the Beacon Awards are a celebration of best practice and innovation in further education Colleges across the United Kingdom. The finalists for this year’s awards were announced at the AoC’s Annual Conference in Birmingham at the end of November, and the winners will be revealed at a glamorous ceremony in March next year.

The nomination recognises our rail training academy in partnership with Cat1 Safety Training. A collaboration between industry, further education and stakeholders, the academy equips unemployed men and women with the skills and qualifications needed to gain access to employment in the railway infrastructure.

Assessors visited the Quarles campus last Friday, 7th December, to view the rail-track, talk to learners about their experience and meet with employers.

Carole Stott MBE, Chair of the AoC Charitable Trust, said:

The Beacon Awards were created to highlight the great work that goes on in Colleges every day. Colleges put in a fantastic effort to transform the lives of more than two million people each day and are deeply embedded within their communities.

To emphasise Carole’s statement, the rail training academy has a literal life-changing effect on the learners; of the 400 that we have already trained, 84% of them are now in full-time employment and are able to sustainably support their families, something that previously proved difficult.

It is a great achievement to be selected as a finalist and we are confident that we can win the award – stay tuned to find out if we do!
