havering college chris grayling quarles campus visit

We were honoured to welcome Chris Grayling, the Secretary of State for Transport, to our Quarles campus on Thursday 14th June.

The purpose of Chris’ visit was to look at our rail engineering facilities, which he was very impressed by. He was particularly enthralled by the number of learners that secure jobs after completing a five week course at the rail training academy – a staggering 85%.

In partnership with CAT 1 Safety Training, these courses are designed to equip learners with the basic skills needed to gain employment in the rail industry. Many of them have had to overcome a lot of difficulties in life and previously have not been able to gain employment.

It soon became evident to Chris, then, that the College is meeting the needs of the rail and construction industries by providing high quality training in order to overcome the current skills shortage. This is something the College is consistently recognised for, most recently by being awarded Mayor’s Construction Academy quality mark.

It was a pleasure to have Chris visit our campus and his presence was felt by the students. Speaking of the rail courses we offer, one learner said:

When I found out about the course, I thought it was brilliant. I’ve always wanted to get into a job where I can progress, and the sky’s the limit with the rail industry.
