Foundation Skills Students at Havering College

Foundation skills students at Havering College’s Quarles campus took to the kitchen this week to produce culinary Christmas delights. In teams, they had to create their own recipes, prepare and then bake their treats.

After much hard work and effort, a mouth-watering array of gingerbread men, chocolate cakes, fairy cakes and mince pies were presented to the judges - Nick Gunyon, Curriculum Manager for Hospitality and Daren Nunn, Curriculum Manager for Foundation Skills.

The judges commended all the students for their effort, teamwork and attention to detail and awarded first place to the bakers of the gingerbread men, Jason Egalton and Alex Jozefcyk. Nick Gunyon, himself a teacher, said “I feel very honoured to have been asked to judge this competition. In my department we run professional cookery courses and if my students baked to this level I’d be very proud”.

Jane Scott, Foundation Skills lecturer and organiser of the day commented: “It went better than expected and above all the students really enjoyed the competition. It gave them a sense of achievement and built confidence in their own skills”.

All in all, Havering College’s first ever Bake-Off was a resounding success. In order to keep the pot boiling, watch this space for their Easter Challenge.
