 HBA FINALIST LOGO

Jessica Ravenhill, 19 from Bishops Stortford in Essex is a Finalist in the Apprentice of the Year Category for the Havering Business Awards.

Jessica, a Social Media Apprentice at Havering College of Further & Higher Education in Hornchurch, tells her story on why an apprenticeship is a good career choice.

“University was never for me. I knew that I wanted to start working and getting real experience. I always want to learn more and an apprenticeship was the perfect way to develop my skills and my knowledge in a real working environment. Social media and digital marketing is such an important, ever-changing component of helping businesses thrive in the modern age. I applied for Havering College’s apprenticeship because I knew that it would be the best start to my career. The staff here are hard-working and passionate and have inspired me to do my best.

In the past six months I have been involved in a variety of events and projects including open events, the Careers & Ideas show and industry days. Starting with only Facebook and Twitter we have developed a clear voice and style that communicates everything that Havering College is about. We have added Instagram, LinkedIn and Google+ to our social media accounts, which are all populated by me. We have revamped old profiles and created new ones. In total, I currently maintain 15 social media accounts for the college.

The best part of my job is when colleagues have said that they have noticed the difference and the effect that our improved social media presence has. As people have seen what it is capable of achieving, staff from all departments have got involved.

I believe that I am a successful apprentice because I can demonstrate  the impact social media can have on a business, educate others as I learn more myself and establish an array of social media profiles that show everything Havering College has to offer. As part of the marketing team I know that I will continue to learn and contribute more as I complete my apprenticeship.

I wholly recommend an apprenticeship as a career route.”
