Havering College

INDUSTRY experts say demand for engineers and people with fabrication and welding qualifications will continue to grow and offer excellent career prospects for students at Havering College.

That was the message delivered to 90 learners on Engineering programmes when specialists visited the college's Quarles Campus in Tring Gardens, Harold Hill, for an industry day which focused on the sector.

Paul Meenan, Docklands Light Railway's Electrical and Mechanical Engineer, said massive infrastructure and construction projects such as Crossrail were creating unprecedented demand for skilled workers with professionals able to command good salaries.

He was joined by Jenna Moores, recruitment manager at the Upminster-based facilities management company Arcus Solutions.

Both shared their knowledge and gave their top tips on how to maximise the chances of success when seeking a job, apprenticeship and career advancement.

Joe Argent, 26, from Harlow, a mechanical engineer with Fire Protection Limited is studying on an HNC Mechanical Engineering programme at Havering College.

He said: "The industry day was interesting – it was good for everyone, including those who are not employed, to hear about all the really good job opportunities that are out there."

The seminar was followed by a second session directed at the college's Plumbing students. It was supported by two speakers from the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering – technical and education manager Bryan Clark and membership promotion officer Gemma Hooker.

The day was organised by the college's Enterprise and Employability Hub in conjunction with the Our Talented Future employment consultancy as one of a series of course related industry events being staged for all students.

Our Talented Future co-founder Adam Watling, who chaired the Engineering seminars, said: "We are very grateful to our panellists. They are all inspirational individuals who gave students a real insight into their industries, raising aspirations with a stack of information on the opportunities out there for those with the drive and ambition to get ahead."
