PREPARE Ye for a once-in-a-lifetime chance opportunity to take part in a musical on a West End stage.
Havering College is inviting talented performers to audition to play Jesus in Godspell at Her Majesty's Theatre in Haymarket, London, next May.
The college in Hornchurch, Greater London, is thrilled to have been granted permission to stage Godspell at the prestigious theatre.
The production of Godspell will be a community project, involving schools and learning organisations from the London Borough of Havering, with audition opportunities for the lead role of Jesus, John the Baptist and Judas plus supporting cast members. The age range is six to 22.
The show is inclusive and learning disabilities and/or physical challenges are no barrier to taking part.
Director/producer Peter Dayson, who lectures in Music at Havering College, said: "I am very excited about it. Godspell is my favourite musical. It will be a modern day production with a nod to the original concept where Jesus wore a superman T-shirt.
"This will be our ninth year of running these West End productions and Godspell was our very first show. We have decided to do it again but with a new treatment so I am setting it in a park with trees, bandstand and flowerbeds which is what the children will be playing as in a Greek chorus.
"We are looking for someone to play Jesus and Judas/John the Baptist – a role which is played by the same person – and there is still time for more schools to audition. There are also backstage roles for people – personal assistants, runners, technical crew and backstage crew."
The college has a proud history of award-winning productions and holds Artsmark Gold status from Arts Council England in recognition its commitment to, and excellence in, arts education.
Last season's college production of Synergy Street at Her Majesty's Theatre received rave reviews and was included in an award winning entry which saw Havering College named 'Best Business in the Community' at the 2014 Havering Business Awards.
Mr Dayson said: "This is a unique educational experience for the students and people in the community who take part. They get to perform at an iconic theatre and showcase their talents in front of casting directors, producers, agents and representatives from Disney.
"I get an amazing sense of personal satisfaction from seeing the students and children experience the opportunity of a lifetime. I don't know any other college who does what we do."
Godspell will be staged at Her Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket, London, on Sunday May 3rd, 2015.
