There were an estimated 4.9 million private sector businesses in the UK at the start of 2013. Despite the recent economic difficulties, the trend has been a steady increase in the business population. Today’s global economy brings with it a wealth of new markets, shrinking profit margins and increasing operating expenses; the need for good business administration has never been greater.

This nationally accredited certificate, which develops understanding of basic administration concepts and practices, is based on the business and administration national occupational standard.

You will study Enterprise and Business while completing four main units of coursework. The first unit looks at Business and the internal and external factors affecting business. The second unit will teach you about the finances and resources used within a business and you will gain knowledge of the accounts used within business. Unit 3 will look at the marketing of a business and give you practical experience of marketing products. The final unit will provide you with the practical experience of running your own small business enterprise.

During the course you will travel to other companies to gain experience of team work, building an enterprise, gain supporting in writing you own CV and be shown how to apply for vacancies and be successful in securing employment. You will run your own market stall at either Spitalfield or Romford Market.

If you would like a 'hands on' approach to running a small business and at the same time gain a formal qualification, then this is the course for you.

At the same time as studying Business and Enterprise you will also study English and Mathematics functional skills to improve your English and Maths skills if required. You will also gain support to improve your employability skills.

If you are not sure what career you want to enter into, then this qualification is ideal for you. You will gain an insight into different areas of the business world which will support you in all aspects of any career choice you make. Following a successful completion of the course, you would also be able to enter onto the Level 3 Business programme or alternatively, you could gain employment.

The course is made up of four core units and five specialist units chosen by the college. You will learn about the subjects including business communication, sales and customer service and financial controls.

The course will give you a good grounding in all the areas of business which you will find useful when you enter the world of work.

Want to set-up your own business? Then Level 3 is for you. In just one year you'll start and run your own micro business.We'll teach you to manage the day-to-day but tricky business challenges: supply chain management, customer communication, financial control, future growth planning and performance recording and analysis and you'll get ample opportunity to work with leading business people with a placement in a leading UK firm.

The BTEC National Diploma in Business is a 1 year course for anyone interested in a career in business or wishing to progress to a higher level of study at University.

Students will initially work towards 18 units of study for Diploma Level. Three of the four compulsory units will be studied during the first term, with tutors assessing students competency at the end of the first term.

The students may visit outside organisations to see Business concepts and skills in place. Day trips in this country and abroad also take place including a residential. All trips are compulsory and require a fee.
