What's Involved

AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) works with around 130,000 members worldwide in more than 90 countries and supported by over 30,000 employers. AAT qualifications are universally respected and internationally recognised.

Apprentices will complete two qualifications throughout the higher apprenticeship:

  • AAT Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting;
  • AAT Level 4 Diploma in Business Skills.

AAT Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting:

The AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting covers high-level accounting and finance topics and tasks. Learners will look at and become comfortable with a wide range of financial management skills and applications, and gain competencies in: drafting financial statements for limited companies; recommending accounting systems strategy; and constructing and presenting complex management accounting reports. Learners will also learn about specialist areas such as tax, auditing, credit management, and cash and treasury management.

The duration of this Apprenticeship is approximately 18-24 months. This qualification comprises of four mandatory units and two specialist units

The mandatory units are:

  • Management Accounting: Budgeting;
  • Management Accounting: Decision and Control;
  • Financial Statements of Limited Companies;
  • Accounting Systems and Controls.

The optional units are:

Business Tax; Personal Tax.

AAT Level 4 Diploma in Business Skills:

Through completion of the Diploma in Business Skills learners will develop essential business skills for the working environment. These will include communication skills, commercial awareness, performance in a business environment and managing project finances.

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE Grade C in English Language;
  • GCSE Grade C in Maths;
  • Completed AAT Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Accounting;
  • Ideally experience at Accounting Technician or Accounts Manager level.

  • AAT Level 4 Diploma in Business Skills.

Course Assessment Method

AAT Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting:

Learners must successfully complete the three mandatory unit assessments and one synoptic assessment plus unit assessments for two optional units (Business Tax and Personal Tax) to achieve this qualification. The proportion of this qualification assessed by external assessment is 100%.

To achieve the qualification and to be awarded a grade, a learner must pass all the mandatory unit assessments and the synoptic assessment. Unit assessments and synoptic assessments are not individually graded. These assessments are given a mark that is used in calculating the overall grade, as detailed below:

Grade definition: Percentage threshold: Distinction 90–100% Merit 80–89% Pass 70–79%

AAT Level 4 Diploma in Business Skills:

For the Level 4 Diploma in Business Skills, learners will be assessed regularly in the workplace by an assessor. This will mean that the assessor will see them operate in the course of their normal duties. Throughout the programme they will be able to draw upon their activities and on-job-development to collect evidence of their performance.
