What's Involved

This is a practical one year study programme designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding required to obtain employment to work in accounts and finance. The qualification also provides UCAS points equivalent to 2 A Levels at grade C should students be thinking of applying to university.

The modules you can expect to study are:

  • Advanced Bookkeeping: This examines the adjustments that might need to be made to an initial trial balance before the final accounts can be produced
  • Final Accounts Preparation: This covers sole traders, partnerships and the preparation of financial statements from incomplete records
  • Management and Costing: This examines the measurement and control of material, labour and overhead costs, different approaches to costing and short/long-term decision-making
  • Indirect Tax: This covers the rules and regulation surrounding VAT and includes the completion of VAT Returns
  • Advanced Diploma Synoptic: This module covrs the use of Excel Spreadsheets, Professional Ethics and revisits the bookkeeping and costing units

Students will also undertake modules designed to develop their employability skills – including problem-solving, self-reliance and teamwork. On this course students aged 16-18 receive free membership of the AAT.

Entry Requirements

AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting and GSCE grade 4s in English and Mathematics are required.

Where will it take me?

Students who perform well at Level 3 (usually achieving at least a Merit grade) can progress onto the AAT Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting or take advantage of exemptions offered by the main awarding bodies, for example ICAEW or CIMA. Many students obtain employment or apprenticeships in accounts or finance (usually local firms or larger companies in London) and continue their AAT studies on day-release or evening programmes.
