'Here's a thought..'
Posted on 22 Jul 2010
I'm stuck on a train bored off my box and I'm suddenly struck by 2 headlines picked out at random as I scan other people's newspapers (trying not to look as though I'm scanning other people's newspapers!). One is a quote from the Chief Executive of Ucas saying 'I can't work miracles they'll have to adjust their aspirations'! Interesting use of English; using the word 'adjust'. I think she must be using it in the same sense as 'lower' - that's a terrible indictment!
The other headline reads '25,000 brightest applicants rejected by uni.s'. This is of course all to do with the Higher Education Funding Council limiting student recruitment to degree courses because of budget cuts. Its a great disappointment for all these young people and their families. But here's a thought - they could think of 'adjust' in its actual meaning ie 'alter' as opposed to 'lower' and instead of doing a Full time degree course away from home they could do a part time degree course at their local college preferably at Havering College where we have many degrees they can do and get a job and earn money while they do it!
Easy!.... Perhaps I'll go back to reading other people's newspapers - especially as they've now turned onto the sports pages!
