College governing boards vary in size and composition. Havering College Board has a membership of 20 which includes governors drawn from the local business community, our partner university, community leaders, public service and the local council, students and staff. The Board has significant high level financial and other expertise.
The work of the governors is conducted through its formal meetings and through other engagements with the college community. There are three standard meetings of the full board each year. There is also a structure of committees where detailed work is carried out. Currently these are Curriculum, Community and Business, Student/Governor, Employment Policy and Finance, Audit, Accommodation, Remuneration and Search. Typically, committees meet three times a year.
We are keen to involve people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. You may have experience in business, community or social work with charities, financial or legal practice, or even be an entrepreneur. The broader your vocational field and cultural experience, the better.
The post is unpaid but the voluntary role is highly rewarding. Governors are skilled individuals who want to put something back into the community and wish to be part of a decision making process which will make a real difference to the opportunities available to their neighbours and to the success of learners. There are good opportunities for training and development in this role.
This voluntary role brings many professional rewards such as boardroom experience adding to your CV and a positive step towards long-term career development.
