Havering College reviews performance and activities working with a group of partner colleges that include Uxbridge, City of Westminster, Greenwich Community College and Newham College. Over 2009 - 2011 the Equality and Diversity performance of the college was reviewed.
Strengths for Havering College noted by the reviewers were: 1. Equality and Diversity (E&D) is well embedded at a strategic level and includes:
• a clear reporting framework and a comprehensive annual report
• clarity on future plans
• clear roles and responsibilities
• targeted interventions
• Targeted committees and sub-committees to address E&D issues
• Appropriate data collection and its use to identify gaps for future actions
• Language barriers are addressed using appropriate technology (translating pens)
2. The value of an E&D champion to lead and bring together E&D initiatives; the overview provided by such a person enables strategic prioritisation and monitoring of a wide range of activities.
3. Wide range of and excellent promotional activities reaching all stakeholders including: governors, employers, teaching staff, learners. These include:
• a well presented Equality and Diversity newsletter; content and images demonstrate good practice in E&D.
• a Cyber bullying event for learners
4. Good support for staff responsible for embedding E&D in the curriculum including:
• Induction activities
• Sample Lesson Plans and Schemes of Work
• Tutorial checklist
• Lesson plans and materials for mandatory tutorials sessions on E&D issues; these each include a review sheet which is to be collected and analysed by Student services
5. Good involvement of learners in the Student Union where clear terms of reference, role descriptions and agreed activities. Excellent record keeping; records show how learners work with peers on many issues, including E&D.
6. Excellent collection of a wide range of data by the Student Services team which is used to inform action and reported formally, twice a year. Actions taken are based on the data and the impact of the actions is recorded. A new report on applications provides data on all applications by gender, ethnicity etc. The team are currently working on how best to use this new data set to improve practice and promote Equality and Diversity.
7. Detailed records of in-year Information, Advice and Guidance interactions with learners and the impact of such sessions are clearly recorded and monitored.
8. Evidence of involvement with the local community includes learners supporting children in a local school
9. Policies and procedures are impact assessed and excellent monitoring systems in place to identify the outstanding paperwork. The system is lengthy but rigorous.
2011-12 update
The E&D Champion role has continued to grow and develop. As well as being an excellent internal resource, this role is continually approached by external organizations to act as a resource and advice about good practice. This role has been identified as an example of good practice by LSIS and was intergral in supporting the college to host a joint E&D conference with LSIS at Havering College. Across the PRD the E&D Champion has been working to spread and standardize good practice in lesson planning and session activity. The success of this role has increased the reputation of the college not only locally but nationally.
Schemes of work have a stronger E&D emphasis and teachers are continuing to embed E&D into all areas of practice. This has been supported and developed by the use of cross college joint lesson observations.
All colleges are now able to share documentation from both curriculum or general college activity, e.g. Posters to promote E&D. Diversity calenders.
