Is this course for me?
This course forms a natural progression to GCSE Science/Additional Science moving onto the next level within the subject of Chemistry. This A/S course is the first of a two year A level course which is a suitable preparation for degree level courses.
What will I study?
This OCR Chemistry A/S course (H034) includes 3 units that you will study. The first unit develops the ideas of atoms through to reacting masses and incorporates bonding, structure and the Periodic Table. The second unit commences with chains and functional groups such as alkenes, alcohols and halogenoalkanes. Modern analytical techniques are introduced alongside energy changes, rates and equilibrium. The unit is completed by looking at green chemistry and resources. The third unit draws on 3 practical assessments carried out during the year.
These are the compulsory subjects:
Equations.
Moles.
Reaction Mechanisms.
What are the entry requirements?
You will be expected to have grade C or better in both GCSE Science and Additional Science, or a grade C or above in GCSE Chemistry or an equivalent level 2 qualification.
In addition you must have grade C in GCSE Maths (preferably Higher)
plus grade C in GCSE English.
What can I do next?
The majority of successful students progress to university to study science related degree programs such as chemical engineering, materials science, environmental science, biotechnology etc.
A level Chemistry is essential for some professions including: medicine, pharmacy and veterinary science.
What employment does this relate to?
Chemistry is a central science feeding into medicine, engineering, materials, life science and earth science.
Chemists end up working in the chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, public services(forensics, water, health, environmental) academia and teaching, publishing and technical writing, patent law, finance and investment.
Chemistry graduates with careers away from chemistry might work in accountancy, finance, law, sales and marketing and consultancy.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is carried out through regular internal tests whilst external assessment includes 2 written exams and practical assessment.
Written exams: Unit 1 represents 30% of the AS
Unit 2 represents 50% of the AS
