SOCIAL WORK
MODULES  |  Final phase

In the Final phase the students will study the following….

Competence in Social Work Practice (2)
In order for social work students to continue to develop practice competence, it is necessary for them to have the opportunity to continue their social work practice in a supervised and assessed practice learning context. This will ensure their continued development as social workers and, by the end of the module, if satisfactorily completed, will mean that students have established their competence to practice as fully qualified social workers.

This module, the second of the two practice modules, will therefore continue the process established in the Competence in Social Work Practice (1) module and will allow the student further opportunity to develop and expand their social work knowledge in a practice environment. This is in order that their skills and values can be judged against each of the Key Roles and the practice unit requirements as defined by the National Occupational Standards. This module carries 45 credit points.

Major Project (Dissertation)
Social workers have to demonstrate the core competence of developing their own professional practice, knowledge and values. In order to extend personal skills from competence to expertise it will be important that social workers can - not only interpret published research - but that they can also employ research techniques in order to develop their own knowledge and understanding.

The QAA National Qualifications Framework specifies that Honours level Graduates must evidence analytic and problem solving techniques relevant to many types of employment and also be able to evidence understanding at the current boundaries of an academic discipline. This module is designed to assist students to develop and employ their analytic and problem solving skills as well as to develop their knowledge at the boundaries of social work practice. The project carries 45 credit points.

Social Work, Ideology and Discourse
The purpose of this 15-credit-point module, is to provide learners with the theoritical tools required to investigate complex ideological influences on social work practice. Social work students and practitioners require a thorough understanding of how ideology, in its broadest sense has shaped and continues to shape social work practice. Social work practice cannot be separated from ideological influences.

The module aims to enable students to make sense of, integrate and identify a range of political and ideological ideas, issues and concepts within their own practice. It encourages a critical and enquiring approach, requiring a thorough integration of these concepts within day to day social work activity.

Advanced Interventions for Social Work Practice
This 15-credit-point module aims to assist learners to develop in-depth knowledge on one specific area of professional practice. This will include a focis on critically analysing the theoretical basis of the intervention, ensuring learners gain an in-delth understanding of the historical background of the intervention, including legal, policy, guidance and development of this specific area of practice. There will be a focus on the development of skills within the module and an exploration of how the intervention is adapted and applied to working with individuals, couples, families, groups, neighbourhoods and communities.
Students will be offered the choice from at least two options for this module enabling an area of specialised intervention knowledge to be built.
