Student Union

All Havering College students are automatically part of the Students’ Union. This is led by an elected committee who represent them at College Governors, College Management, and Local and National Government meetings and events.

A perk to being a student at Havering College is the opportunity to purchase an N.U.S. Extra Card. N.U.S. is the National Union of Students and the Extra Card is a nationally recognised student discount card which can be used at many high street shops and on-line companies, e.g. Amazon, Superdrug, Warehouse, McDonalds, JJB and many more.

StAR’s (Student Academic Representatives) have an important role in finding out the needs and issues of students in their tutor/class group and passing these onto the Students’ Union.

This allows the “voice” of the students to be heard and enables the college and the Students’ Union to respond to issues quickly, making your time at Havering College more enjoyable.

Student Union 2011-12

The Union work closely with Student Services to offer a range of extracurricular activities including fundraising, trips, awareness raising events and end of year celebrations such as the Hestival.

Activities and events organised and led by the Students’ Union members continuously contribute to the vibrant and creative environment around the College. In the past the S.U. Officers have overseen the opening event of the HE education common room and various competitions and activities successfully took place.

For example, the union got involved in organising social events such as, the set up of a college awards night, named the Student Union Variety Awards (SUVA). This is a BAFTA style awards night with celebrity guests and exciting awards. The first ever SUVA night was launched in April 2011 and was a great success with plans for it to carry on. They also have an end of year celebration the Hestival which had been continued from the previous year.

The Hestival is a end of year celebration held in the summer term, previously we have had celebrity guests such as Mo George (Gus from Eastenders) and in-house performances from B- Block. The 2010- 2011 Union set up a discount card that will be available from enrolment in September 2011. The discount card will enable discounts throughout the college and money raised will go back into the Unions funding to provide support and events for you.

The Student Union aims to promote the general welfare of students. They represent all students, regardless of race, creed or circumstance to achieve their full potential. The Unions multi- Cultural officer is very keen to promote and discuss equal opportunities within the college.

More information about the Students' Union and the N.U.S. can be found on the Student Intranet.
