Homelessness inspires art exhibition

A STUDENT at Havering College is raising awareness of homeless people through an art exhibition in Romford.

Kimberly Norman – who is in the second year of a BA Fine Arts degree course at the college in Hornchurch, Essex – is staging a solo show in Unit 132 of the Romford Shopping Hall, Romford Market Place, until Wednesday, June 13.

The 20-year-old is a volunteer befriender with Hope for Havering – a homeless night shelter project run by churches across the borough.

Kimberly, 20, who lives in Kent, is the second Havering College student artist to benefit from free exhibition space under the Romford Contemporary Arts programme.

The Havering Council funded project aims to showcase and promote a diverse and challenging programme of contemporary arts in the borough.

In To Knit Together Kimberly focuses on finding new ways to develop her documentation of compassion for people incorporating mediums such as mono printing, collage, painting, embroidery and placing of materials.

One piece of work is based on a photograph taken in Mozambique of two boys in a tyre. In another she has replicated a shopping trolley laden with the possessions of a man living on the streets.

Kimberly said: “There is a lot of compassion in my heart for people and I want to use my art to raise awareness of the issues faced by homeless people.”

To Knit Together, an exhibition by Kimberly Norman, is at Romford Shopping Hall Unit 132 from 9am-5pm until Wednesday, June 13th.

More student artwork will be on show at the End of Year Creative Arts Show taking place at the college’s £6million Centre for Creative Arts at the Ardleigh Green Campus in Hornchurch, Essex, from June 19-22.
