Finance
Higher Education students can access financial support via a number of avenues. Information, advice and guidance about funding higher education courses for both full and part-time students, can be obtained from Student Finance England www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance or by contacting Student Services on 01708 462781.
Tuition Fees
All eligible full-time students can get a student loan for tuition fees. This is a non commercial loan from the Government. The money is paid directly to the college and students only have to start paying it back once they have left the college and are earning £15,000 per year.
Part-time students are able to apply for a Fee Grant to help with tuition fees and a Course Grant to help with materials needed for their course.
Access to Learning Funding
Discretionary help is available for full and part-time students studying higher education courses who have a household income of £21,000 or below. Funding may be used to help towards course related costs. Before you can receive assistance from the Access to Learning fund you must apply for your full entitlement of Student Maintenance Loan.
PGCE Teacher Training Bursaries
Students studying the full-time, pre-service PGCE may qualify for a bursary depending on the subject area they intend to teach. These bursaries are accessed once students are enrolled and are attending College. Please contact Student Services on 01708 462781 or e-mail ss4he@havering-college.ac.uk for more information.
Social Work Bursaries
Social Work degree students can apply for the social work bursary through NHSBSA. The application pack is available at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/Students. This is non-means-tested and non-repayable bursary, but students must meet the residency criteria. The social work bursary is not an NHS bursary.
Means Tested Benefits and Studying
Student Services recommends that students considering studying full time in higher education speak to their benefits office before becoming a full time student to identify how their benefits will be affected.
Further information on the above funding can be found in our Financial Assistance for Learners leaflet. This information is available from Student Services. Please e-mail SS4HE@havering-college.ac.uk for assistance. We also have information on student discounts.
