Why did you choose Havering College?
I chose Havering because it offered the flexibility I required to complete my studies whilst working as a Graphic Design Manager in London. I was able to attend college one day per week and undertake the rest of my studies in my own time during the evening and at weekends. By doing this I was able to support myself during my studies and achieve my ultimate aim of a degree, without getting into debt or giving up the job which I enjoyed.

What subject did you study? What do you feel you achieved?
I studied Graphic Design at Havering College beginning with HNC level and then HND, which enabled me to begin the degree programme in year two. To gain the degree took four years in total and culminated with a graduation ceremony in November 2009.

For me, already working as a designer, the benefits were mixing with other creative people and being able to work on projects totally unrelated to my job, which enabled me to be more experimental. During the course I was able to take part in organising and planning several design exhibitions, an experience that I would probably not have had otherwise. My knowledge of design has expanded and my interest in the subject has grown too.

Gaining a First in my degree is probably one of the proudest achievements of my career so far, as it took a lot of hard work and determination but made the end result all the more satisfying. Teaching is something that I'm definitely considering pursuing in the future and this is partly due to my own experience at Havering College. I feel that having completed my degree I am well positioned to achieve that goal.

What would you say to someone thinking of studying at Havering College?
The facilities at Havering College are excellent and cater well for the different subject areas. The Creative Arts department is great with all the creative aspects and courses the College has to offer all sitting under one roof – it's like its own art school! The staff on the course all have professional experience in design and are enthusiastic and passionate about the subject; they offer guidance and support throughout the learning experience.
