College set to unwrap new centre of learning

HAVERING College of Further and Higher Education is part of the Brentwood Learning Partnership and poised to take the wraps off a brand new venture bringing exciting educational opportunities to Brentwood.

Havering College is to develop a specialist vocational centre in partnership with Sawyers Hall College in Sawyers Hall Lane.

The new facility – a flagship hair and beauty salon to train the professionals of tomorrow – is set to open its doors to students and clients this spring.

Brentwood Learning Partnership is seeking to provide more opportunities for Essex learners who want to follow vocational careers.

Havering College is investing three quarters of a million pounds to create a state-of-the-art facility which will be known as The Lanes Hair and Beauty.

The Lanes Hair and Beauty will enjoy the same industry-recognised status as the college’s established Ardleigh Green Campus. Its hair salon is one of only five L’Oréal professional flagship colleges for hairdressing in the country.

Havering College already has a strong foothold in Brentwood with its High Street IT training centre.

Havering College principal Noel Otley said: “We are delighted to be widening our provision in Brentwood having offered IT training and business services from our centre in Brentwood High Street for the past ten years.

“With the new hair and beauty salon, we will be providing more opportunities for vocational training. Given time, we see this development as the beginning of a further expansion of the college to increase the vocational options for learners in Brentwood.”

Sawyers Hall College head teacher Stephen Capper, who is also chairman of the Brentwood Learning Partnership, said: “We are delighted to be working with Havering College to enable this development for Sawyers Hall College and the Brentwood community.

“Children and young people across the town will benefit from this significant investment which paves the way for further partnership working with Havering College in the future.”

The new Havering College facility will cater for up to 150 students who will be able to gain qualifications in hairdressing, beauty therapy and holistic therapy. Part of the existing Jack Petchey Building on the Sawyers Hall College site is being completely refurbished to create a 16-bed beauty salon, a 16-station hairdressing salon and classroom.

The Lanes Hair and Beauty will be open to learners from the age of 14 to 19 as well as mature students. Clients will be able to take advantage of reduced price treatments by acting as ‘models’ to help students with their assignments, under the supervision of fully-qualified hairdressing and beauty therapists.

Students and parents at Sawyers Hall College, together with local residents, are being offered the chance of a sneak preview of The Lanes Hair and Beauty as it will be showcased at a Sawyers Hall College options evening on Thursday, February 25 from 6pm-9pm.

Sawyers Hall College is to transform in 2012 when existing pupils will transfer to Shenfield High School. The Sawyers Hall site will then become known as Shenfield High School and Community College Campus. There is potential for further involvement between Havering College and the community campus, working with the Brentwood Learning Partnership.
