Can’t Fail - Won’t FailWhy Practice Assessors Do Not Fail Students in Practice Learning Settings.
There is much public debate about the quality of social work training, not least in the wake of Baby P. and so the practice learning opportunity has become an even more important site in determining 'fitness to practice'.
This presentation is based on empirical research undertaken as part of a Professional Doctorate in Social Work and focuses on why Practice Assessors find it so difficult to fail social work students in practice learning settings - despite strong evidence of lack of competence and, in some cases, lack of suitability for social work practice. Utilising qualitative research paradigms, the findings are presented as ‘stories’. The study has potential implications for not only social work but all professions where there is assessed learning in the field.
