Students stay local to beat university scramble

HUNDREDS of applicants will face a mad scramble to find university places this summer…but there is a solution lying closer to home.

Instead of missing out and abandoning dreams, young people are being urged to consider another option.

Havering College of Further and Higher Education offers 20 degree programmes on the doorstep. Studying locally will save students money but is definitely not a second best choice.

Rachel Arnold has just completed a BA Honours degree in Moving Image and will be back in September to start the PGCE course that will take her into teaching.

Rachel, 21, from Hornchurch, said: “The best bit about Havering College is the people. You get a lot more tutor time. The college has a very relaxed, fun atmosphere and I have been involved in the Student Union activities, through which I have gained skills that will help me when I go out to work. It may sound cheesy but it has been the best experience of my life.”

Steven Bortone from Purfleet, who this year graduated with a BA Honours in Graphic Design, said: “I was offered places at five universities but chose to come to Havering College on the recommendation of someone in the industry. The support and encouragement at the college has been phenomenal.”

The college offers BA (Hons) degrees, Foundation Degrees and HND/Cs in a variety of subjects including art and design, computing, engineering, business, construction and early years - some available part time.

Havering College is about to launch a brand new Business Management Foundation Degree, which will equip students with the skills and knowledge to become the business Dragons of tomorrow.

The degree – which is subject to validation – will be based at its Ardleigh Green Campus in Hornchurch, Essex and students will study a range of modules including business strategy, marketing management and financial management.

There are many advantages to studying locally, not least…no top up fees. Students can study for nearly a third of the cost of going to any other college or university. Havering College fees for 2010/11 are £1,310 per year.
