It all adds up to more success

A TRIO of college learners are seeing a real return on their investment in studying after winning a place in the finals of the WorldSkills UK Accounting Technician Skills Competition.

A team made up of Tracey Wolfe, Tyler Trew and Daniel Adleman – all AAT Intermediate students from Havering College - took part in a taxing regional heat at the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) offices in London.

Tracey, Tyler and Daniel, who are work based learners as they all have jobs, undertook a variety of accounting tasks in a testing business scenario.

They gained maximum marks from the judges in five areas and will now go on to compete in the national finals on June 27.

Tyler Trew,18, works for Johal & Company in Hornchurch while 25-year-old Tracey Wolfe is employed by Fremantle Media. Daniel Adleman, 19, is with the Ilford-based company Davis Grant.

Six more students from Havering College also took part in the regional heat

Curriculum manager Muhammad Mahmud said: “The competition assessed students' ability to record, process and summarise accounting information using a computerised book-keeping system accurately and efficiently within a limited period of time. Our team secured 90 percent marks in this part of the assessment.”

Havering College principal Noel Otley said: “WorldSkills UK is all about promoting excellence across various industries. We are extremely proud that Tracey, Tyler and Daniel are national finalists in this test of accountancy skills. They are a credit to themselves, their teachers and their companies.”

Havering College students have walked into a Dragon’s Den style competition and two, Sikiru Ayinla and Maryam Martins, have emerged as winners.

The BTEC National Diploma Business students attended a business masterclass at City University where they were placed in groups and given a student ambassador from the university to work with. They were asked to create a product or service which they then had pitch to a panel of entrepreneurs.

Sikiru and Maryam, who had been paired with two students from NewVic, made a big impression on the “Dragons” with their pitch and were highly complimented.
