London Freight Booster (LFB)

Havering College led the development and design of a new course/qualification for Freight Drivers, known as the London Freight Booster. Two pilots were successfully delivered in February 2008, with drivers participating from Carlsberg, Tradeteam, Musgrave, Tubelines and Amey. Subsequently, we have worked with the awarding body Awards UK, who have now accredited the LFB as a BTEC with additional specialist London Centric Units. The BTEC and specialist units will serve as the underpinning delivery for the NVQ L2 Carry & Deliver Goods.

Havering College is delivering the first accredited LFB course to Vector Wall drivers (part of the Mitsubishi group) starting on the 18th November. We will be delivering the course in 06:00 – 09:00 sessions on Mitsubishi premises to fit in with employee shift patterns, which will help to further demonstrate our flexible commitment to meeting employer needs.

London Freight Booster Technical Certificate

The aim of the LFB is to address the unique urban driving features commercial vehicle drivers face in the Capital. The key themes addressed in the course are designed to raise driver awareness towards sharing the road with an increasing number of vulnerable road users, reducing the threat of terrorism, improving customer service skills and all the essential elements of planning, carrying and delivering goods safety and securely in London.

Candidates will attain the BTEC award in Carry and Deliver Goods (5 modules) in addition to the London Freight Booster Technical Certificate.

Course Details

As well as gaining a nationally-recognised qualification, the LFB will help your drivers have a better understanding of current industry best practice and regulations. The training covers the following modules:

  • Customer service skills
  • Maintaining the safety and security of the load
  • Pre and post-journey procedures
  • Transporting goods and materials in London
  • Route planning in London (includes Congestion Charging, Low Emission Zone and London Lorry Control Scheme, Penalty Charge Notices)
  • Contributing to reducing the threat of terrorism
  • Sharing London's roads safely with others

Drivers will be given a multiple-choice assessment at the end of each module to test their knowledge. By passing the assessments, they'll gain credits towards the LFB NVQ qualification.
