Working through my qualification has made me more aware of how much I already know and do! It has helped to break the stereotype of working in retail, and I have thoroughly enjoyed working through this course alongside my colleagues. I am now progressing onto Level 3.

Recognising the good value that training delivers, I engaged Havering College to deliver NVQ Level 2 qualifications in Retail to 23 employees. By September 2008, Havering College had placed a full-time lecturer – who also proved to be a mentor, coach and assessor – in the store. Six months later, 21 members of staff had successfully achieved their qualification. Not only did staff knowledge and expertise increase, but there were other benefits. Staff turnover and absenteeism were down and staff loyalty was up. Feedback on the programme was enthusiastic to say the least, with one employee saying that it had given her more confidence and encouraged her to further her education. She was now looking forward to starting Level 3, with a view to then going on to do a remote degree in fashion.
