APPRENTICESHIPS add up to a sound business decision for the accounts team at Brentwood-based McLaren Construction.
Havering College of Further and Higher Education is proud to work with McLaren Construction in delivering an apprenticeship programme for its trainee accountants.
Teenager Shaun Bartle is the latest employee of the award-winning building company to benefit from the scheme.
The 19-year-old from Harold Hill is studying towards an Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 2 Certificate in Accounting.
He works full time in the accounts department at the Kings Road head office and studies at the Havering College Ardleigh Green Campus in Hornchurch, Essex, two evenings a week.
Shaun, a trainee assistant accountant, said: “After college I had originally planned to go to university but wanted to find business based work for one year. When I was offered the chance to study for the AAT qualification through an apprenticeship with McLaren and Havering College, I realised it was a much better option for me.
“I attend college two evenings a week after work – to get anywhere in life you have to put the effort in.”
Shaun, who joined McLaren Construction in August 2010, has already had a positive impact on the company.
John Bailey, the company’s finance director, said: “Shaun has taken the initiative in arranging meetings with senior managers to discuss issues and develop solutions. Some of his ideas have been taken on board.
“Apprenticeships are all about quality and cost. You get someone with enthusiasm who will be trained in the way you want and can be moulded into a better employee It is a two-way process. The apprentices gain some very marketable qualifications, excellent experience and high level skills.”
Havering College delivers a wide range of apprenticeships across all sectors.
