APPRENTICESHIPS ARE ROUTE TO SUCCESS
HAVERING College of Further and Higher Education has teamed up with the Cycle Systems Academy to run an apprenticeship in cycle maintenance.
Cycling has never been cooler and the growing industry needs a steady supply of trained mechanics to keep the country’s cyclists on the road.
Cycle Systems Academy is a cycle servicing company offering individual call-out, fleet maintenance and training courses. It works with several London Boroughs, large organisations and employers such as the Greater London Authority at City Hall where they have even been known to fix Mayor Boris Johnson’s bike.
The apprenticeship scheme offers a full SEMTA approved framework in Engineering and the training is delivered at the Cycle Systems Academy’s state-of-the-art training facility in Islington and at Havering College.
Havering College employer engagement manager Nigel Hogg said: “Working in partnership with this quality training provider, we expect to raise the standards of training and maintenance across the sector in London using the apprenticeship route to fund and enhance the provision.”
Cycle Systems Academy director Julia Lally said: “Our company is different in that we train apprentices and use apprentices in our own workforce which means we understand how apprenticeships work from both ends.
“Apprenticeships are a phenomenal opportunity both for young people and the companies who employ them. Labour costs are much lower and the young person grows up in the culture of the company. I would recommend apprentices to other businesses without a doubt.”
Cycle Systems Academy’s newest apprentice is 17-year-old Matt Chandler from North London.
Matt is passionate about cycling and has long term ambitions to run his own business.
He said: “The apprenticeship is a great experience because I have been able to start out earlier in my career and I really enjoy it.”
Havering College delivers a wide range of apprenticeships across all sectors, including cycle maintenance. For further information on apprenticeships at Havering College call the Business Services team on
