AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) works with around 130,000 members worldwide in more than 90 countries and supported by over 30,000 employers. AAT qualifications are universally respected and internationally recognised.

The purpose of the AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting is to prepare students to master more complex financial processes, including final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, costs and revenues and professional ethics.

The AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting covers a range of complex accounting tasks, including maintaining cost accounting records and the preparation of reports and returns.

The duration of this Apprenticeship is approximately 12 months.

AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting (AQ2016) course outline:

  • Advanced Bookkeeping;
  • Final Accounts Preparation;
  • Management Accounting: Costing;
  • Indirect Tax;
  • Ethics for Accountants;
  • Spreadsheets for Accounting.

Apprentices will complete two qualifications throughout the higher apprenticeship:

  • AAT Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting;
  • AAT Level 4 Diploma in Business Skills.

AAT Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting:

The AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting covers high-level accounting and finance topics and tasks. Learners will look at and become comfortable with a wide range of financial management skills and applications, and gain competencies in: drafting financial statements for limited companies; recommending accounting systems strategy; and constructing and presenting complex management accounting reports. Learners will also learn about specialist areas such as tax, auditing, credit management, and cash and treasury management.

The duration of this Apprenticeship is approximately 18-24 months. This qualification comprises of four mandatory units and two specialist units

The mandatory units are:

  • Management Accounting: Budgeting;
  • Management Accounting: Decision and Control;
  • Financial Statements of Limited Companies;
  • Accounting Systems and Controls.

The optional units are:

Business Tax; Personal Tax.

AAT Level 4 Diploma in Business Skills:

Through completion of the Diploma in Business Skills learners will develop essential business skills for the working environment. These will include communication skills, commercial awareness, performance in a business environment and managing project finances.

The purpose of the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting (AQ2016) is to offer grounding in the core accounting knowledge and skills and is an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to pursue a career in accountancy or finance.

In completing this qualification, learners will develop skills in double-entry bookkeeping and basic costing, as well as an understanding of purchase, sales and general ledgers. In addition, learners will gain exposure to accounting software and develop the professional skills and behaviours required in the workplace.

The duration of this Apprenticeship is approximately 12 months.

AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting (AQ2016) course outline:

  • Bookkeeping Transactions (BTRN);
  • Bookkeeping Controls (BCKL);
  • Elements of Costing (ELCO);
  • Using Accounting Software (UACS);
  • Foundation Synoptic Assessment.

AAT Level 1 is designed to give learners a gentle introduction to the world of accountancy and consists of four modules including Accounting in a Professional environment, Creating Business Documents, Essential Accounting procedures and Mathematics for Accounting.

AAT Level 2 covers the day-to-day elements of accounting including the principles of double-entry bookkeeping, business documents and the recording of day-to-day transactions up to trial balance level. Elements of Costing will provide an introduction to Cost and Management Accounting. Working Effectively in Accounts and Finance looks at some of the administrative aspects of working in an accounts or office environment including scheduling/prioritisation of work, teamwork and office communication.

AAT Level 2 covers the day-to-day elements of accounting including the principles of double-entry bookkeeping, business documents and the recording of day-to-day transactions up to trial balance level. AAT Level 3 emphasises the reports produced by businesses at the end of accounting periods including the final accounts and VAT returns. Costing examines how businesses measure/control their costs and use cost information to make decisions while Professional Ethics examines morals and behaviour in an accounts or financial environment. The Spreadsheet Software module will cover a wide range of the main functions of the Excel Spreadsheet package including construction of spreadsheets, manipulation of data and presentation of information.
