The course involves a one-year study period in art and design subjects. The programme covers a range of areas such as drawing, 3D design, fine art, graphic design, textiles, photography, printmaking and ceramics. These skills will be delivered through a series of assignments that introduce you to a wide range of skills. The historical and design aspects of the course will be complemented by critical studies with visits to galleries and exhibitions to widen and enhance the course and your learning experience.

The course covers a diverse range of Art & Design disciplines and is designed to offer a broad range of skills that can be applied to a range of specialist areas. Subjects covered are likely to include: 3D Design, Animation, Fashion / Textile Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Installation, Illustration, Life Drawing, Painting, Performance, Photography, Printmaking, Video and Sculpture.

The course aims to give students the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding by experiencing work across a range of contexts in art, craft and design. Drawing is seen as a very important aspect of the course and continues throughout the year along with critical studies. Students will have the chance of working in a variety of specialist areas to see where their interests and strengths lie.

In the second year you are expected to make a choice of specialism and the areas that support it. Applications for higher education are also made in the second year and you are given advice as to the direction you should take. The course has a good record of students progressing to higher courses in areas such as fine art, fashion, graphic design, and 3D design both internally and externally.
