Students powered up by skills challenge

STUDENTS at Havering College of Further and Higher Education are fully revved up after competing in a skills challenge to mark National VQ Day.

Four teams of students from motor vehicle and motorsport engineering courses at Havering College and Thames Gateway College put their skills to the test in a team competition held as part of a nationwide day to celebrate vocational qualifications (VQs).

Guests – who included the Mayor of Havering Cllr. Pam Light and her husband, Terry – looked on as students worked on Ford Mondeos, battling it out against the clock on a wheel change exercise plus diagnostics and fault finding tests.

The event in the motor vehicle workshops at the Havering College Ardleigh Green Campus was judged by Kevin Morris from Snap-on, Steve Bewers from D&G Cars Limited and college staff.

The winning team received engraved ratchet screwdrivers donated by Snap-on. They were Terry Davidson, Jack Harvey, Gediminas Burdinas, Dougan Bitada and Jamie St Louis. D & G Cars Limited is to offer a number of students work experience.

Havering College area head for Electrical, Electronic and Motor Vehicle Engineering, Colin Seabrook said: “All too often vocational qualifications are overlooked but more and more young people and adults are undertaking vocational qualifications as a route to career success.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for motor vehicle and motorsport engineering students to demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have acquired during their studies.

“The students, staff and visitors greatly enjoyed the experience and really appreciated the interest shown by employers and professional organisations”
